College Formation

The One Call Institute “College Track” provides foundational formation and training for students who work or volunteer to support the liturgical life of their campus ministry, Newman Center, or parish community.

Participants in the College Track experience a program focused on the liturgical planning, liturgical leadership, and ministerial leadership that ministry in a college community requires. Participants will study the theoretical and practical content needed to plan Masses and prayer services, effectively lead and train other liturgical ministers, recruit volunteers for music and liturgical ministry, run rehearsals and meetings, coordinate and schedule liturgical celebrations, and more. Beyond acquiring essential knowledge and skills, participants will come away from the week with concrete plans and strategies to use when the new semester begins.

The core components of the College Track curriculum are described below.

Liturgical formation

Liturgical formation sessions provide an opportunity for participants of the College and Youth Tracks to learn together. Each session breaks open and explores a key component necessary to our understanding of the liturgical life of the church. The topics offered change each year. Topics offered in the past include “The Foundations of Ritual Music,” “The Three Judgements: Pastoral, Musical, Liturgical,” “Holistic Approaches to Liturgy Planning,” and “Understanding Models of the Church.”

LITURGICAL LEADERSHIP SEQUENCE

In this sequence of daily sessions participants focus on the knowledge and leadership required for effective liturgies. The topics covered include essential liturgical documents (i.e. “General Instruction of the Roman Missal,” Sacrosanctum Concilium, “Sing to the Lord,” etc.), the liturgical year, the structure of the Mass, approaches to liturgical planning, Adoration and Exposition, and more.

MINISTERIAL LEADERSHIP SEQUENCE

This sequence of daily sessions give participants a chance to focus on the knowledge and leadership required for effective ministry. The topics covered include recruiting and training volunteers, effective communication, interpersonal relationships, leadership style, strategic planning and coordination, dynamics of working as a team, and more.

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals are the institute “lab sessions.” All participants spend time with our team conductors working through the music chosen for the end-of-week concert. In addition to perfecting the music, participants and conductors break apart the meaning of each song, reflecting on the Scriptural and Liturgical basis in a way that isn’t performing but praying. Participants experience working with multiple conductors, learn effective rehearsal techniques, apply what they have learned in workshop sessions, and master a wide repertoire of liturgical music. Musical participation in the end of week concert is encouraged, but optional for all college-aged participants.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Spiritual formation programming offers participants of the College and Youth Tracks opportunities to examine their own spiritual life. Each session includes a conference, given by a different presenter, that explores an aspect of spirituality. Following the conference, participants continue to discuss and explore in small peer groups.

prayer

Prayer is of central importance to our time together. All participants and team members gather for Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer each day. Our week ends with Mass on Saturday morning. All liturgies are led by participants. In addition to the prayer schedule for the institute, participants have opportunities for additional prayer experiences on campus (i.e. monastic liturgy of the hours, daily Mass, rosary, etc.).

recreation and Private Lessons

In addition to learning sessions, participants have an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful campus of Saint John's Abbey and University. Spend time at the beach, pray with the monastic community in the Abbey church, discover The Saint John's Bible, adventure through the 2700-acres of woods and lakes, and more!

During this time, participants are also given an opportunity for private lessons. These lessons give participants the chance to work and grow in an intensive way musically or learning more about their leadership strengths. Lessons are offered by members of the One Call team and by music department faculty from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.
